Four titles on the line

On Sunday morning GMT early hours, Katie Taylor faces Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Gardens, New York. The fighting pride of Ireland will meet the Puerto Rican ex-MMA star with four belts on the line – WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO.

This has been billed as the toughest fight of Taylor’s career and the first genuinely competitive bout she has been involved in for quite some time. The winner of this bout won’t only be recognised as the top lightweight in the world but also the best female fighter of her generation. Will KT continue to impress, or is this where she will meet her match? We can’t wait to find out.

Taylor brings a perfect 20-fight CV

KT travels to New York boasting a 20-fight perfect record, but only six of her wins have come by knockout. She’s an all-action sort with bags of fitness, an unrelenting work rate, and she has the basics of boxing spot on. Her style is more about scoring shots and wearing opponents down rather than hunting the showreel KO win. That’s not to say that she doesn’t possess power in both hands.

The 35-year-old from Bray, Ireland stands at just 5ft 5inches tall, and her most recent stoppage win came back in 2019 when dealing with opponent Rose Volante inside nine rounds in Philadelphia. Since that night, she has fought seven and won seven on points, including a majority decision over Delfine Persoon at this venue three years ago.

In December, we last saw Katie in action at the Echo Arena, Liverpool, when she beat Firuza Sharipova comfortably on the scorecards. The judges awarded her the win on Merseyside by scores of three, five and six rounds, but this is expected to be much more competitive. Taylor is 2.01/1 on the Betfair Sportsbook for victory with a points win 2.56/4 and the KO/TKO 8.515/2.

Serrano holds the experience

Puerto Rico-born Serrano is based in Brooklyn, New York, meaning she will enjoy the backing of a large support on fight night. The 33-year-old known as The Real Deal brings a 42-1-1 record, with 30 of her wins scored inside the distance, earning her a 68% KO average. The only defeat on her card was inflicted by Frida Wallberg in Sweden a decade ago. Much has changed for Amanda and female boxing since that loss.

She has won each of her last 28 bouts, many by early stoppage, but her recent form is that of a maturing fighter who is as effective in the opening few rounds as she is in the later stages. Serrano is a danger at any stage of the contest due to her strong work rate and boxing skills. She can fight, and she can box, comfortable in both departments, which makes her a threat to Taylor on Saturday.

Serrano’s last two outings have been won on points, both by a comfortable distance. She was last seen beating Miriam Gutierrez in Tampa last December and will arrive confident in her ability to collect a 43rd career win. Serrano is 1.84/5 for the win with a third points cheer on the bounce 2.6313/8 and a KO/TKO trading at 5.04/1.

KT will grind out a huge win

This will be a cracker from start to finish. Serrano has the power to hurt her opponent early and get the crowd behind her, but it will be Taylor’s work rate and volume of punches that will see her scrape through. Her defence must be tight at all times, but she has the skills to win this bout.

There’s little point backing her for the KO/TKO, as that won’t be her plan of attack. She’ll be patient, box behind the jab and fire off a barrage of lethal combinations. Back Taylor to win on points and enjoy what should be one of the greatest ever female fights.
