Randomising is costing you money

Randomising is costing you money

bencb is not a fan of using random number generators to decide on close spots at the low to mid stakes.

bencb Using RNGs is downright lazy

Randomising in almost any scenario, (especially at low-mid stakes) is straight up wrong. And is costing you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in tournament winnings.

Flipping a coin to decide whether to call or fold is downright lazy. It gives you an excuse to throw your hands up in the air and let the randomiser take the wheel.

(Carrie Underwood, anyone?)

These plays where you’re ‘supposed’ to call 50% and fold 50% might be nice in your GTO wonderland…

But the core principle of GTO strategy is that your opponents are playing GTO as well.

Forget about GTO wonderland

bencb Bencb

When you decide to randomise in your $50 tournament, you’re basically saying:

“Yeah, I think John the crazy whale is probably playing GTO versus me, so I’d better randomise so I can’t be exploited!”

We have to move away from this and play a strategy that’s based on exploits and tendencies, not on GTO.

Very often when you have a situation where you know it’s probably a call 50% of the time and a fold 50% of the time (in GTO wonderland), you have plenty of info at your disposal to make that decision for yourself, instead of flipping a coin.

Think about your opponent, are they tight or loose?

Do you have an edge at the table?

What about ICM pressure?

70% of your winnings come from exploits

bencb GTO works best against other GTO players

Even if you think you’re supposed to call 90% of the time and fold 10%, you’re often still supposed to fold at low-mid stakes. This is because your opponents are likely massively under-bluffing.

And when your opponents under-bluff what do you do?

That’s right, over-fold.

Start taking these things into account, instead of throwing your hands up in the air and letting the randomiser decide your fate. Do you want to be a poker theorist, or a winning player?

It’s your decision.

Understanding GTO is important, and 20%-30% of your winnings will come from it.

But 60%-70% of your winnings will come from your ability to exploit your opponents and deviate from a GTO strategy appropriately.

Not from randomising.

Pairrd App by Raise Your Edge

While checking out the most popular courses on our dedicated Raise Your Edge page, you should also have a look at their unique interactive studying tool Pairrd that is coming with engaging video quizzes, range drilling and hand review quizzes, all based on the most up to date GTO ranges out there.

An essential part when learning poker is the ability to think in ranges and understand the why behind them. Raise Your Edge does a great job of getting that across to their students, meticulously breaking down ranges and explaining the reasoning behind them.

However, memorising ranges is quite hard, and often the only way to learn is by making enough costly mistakes to see one’s errors. Thankfully, Raise Your Edge provides a powerful tool to circumvent that with Pairrd.

PokerStrategy.com editor Barry Carter has reviewed Pairrd and concluded about the merits of the innovative app:

“Pairrd is a unique interactive studying tool that provides something relatively new to the world of poker training, a way to practice spots without having to play them at the tables. It is essentially a dynamic way to make real poker decisions without risking money. Since most of us learn from experience, it’s a natural way to memorise the theory from Raise Your Edge.”
